Founded in 1933 and located in a rural area at the foot of the Mushera Mountains in County Cork, Ireland. At the school there is a firm emphasis on the outdoors and in cultivating an appreciation of nature and the natural world. To this end, the school has its own garden as well as a polytunnel in which students are encouraged to take ownership of their own planting projects. The Irish language name “Muine-fliuch” translates as “wet sod” or “wet ground” in English, and the playing field at the rear of the school lives up to that name, being as it is quite boggy and wet for a large part of the school year. Thanks in part to a grant from the Opturo Charitable Foundation, efforts are currently under way to improve the quality of the playing field, thereby giving students of Muinefliuch National School better access to the same with the goal of enhancing physical fitness and encouraging physical activity among students of the school for years to come.
